49ers Legend Rips Cam Newton Over Brock Purdy Criticism

Hall of Fame legend Warren Sapp did not shy away from expressing his disapproval of Cam Newton’s critical remarks about San Francisco 49ers standout Brock Purdy. Sapp, in a recent interview, employed the classic “look who’s talking” retort to defend Purdy from Newton’s harsh comments.

Newton has been consistently critical of Purdy during a season where many lauded the 49ers quarterback as a potential MVP, even though Lamar Jackson eventually took the lead in the race. Newton, a former Carolina Panthers star and one-time NFL MVP, has taken an opposing stance. His critique of Purdy began in early December when he labeled the young 49ers player as nothing more than a “game manager” who benefits from the talent surrounding him.

Despite Purdy leading the 49ers to Super Bowl 58, Newton continued his critique, asserting that Purdy is only the 10th best player on the team. While Newton framed his “game manager” remark as not a criticism, the intensity of his evaluation did not sit well with many.

In response to Newton’s comments, Hall of Famer Warren Sapp defended Brock Purdy, asserting that Newton lacks the right to make such statements about other quarterbacks and players because he has never been in that position himself. Sapp criticized Newton, stating that he is simply being unreasonable and questioned Newton’s motivation for his outspoken remarks. Sapp reminded Newton that despite winning the 2015 NFL MVP, he failed to secure a Super Bowl victory until he found himself out of the league.

Sapp suggested that Newton might be speaking excessively for attention or relevance. Regardless, Sapp emphasized that Purdy has an opportunity to silence critics, including Newton, by winning the Super Bowl, and actions on the field will ultimately speak louder than words.
