Rangers and their prospective new owners, the 49ers Enterprises, have already started making early moves in their search for a new manager in Europe.

Rangers and 49ers Issue Takeover Update

Speculation surrounding a potential Rangers takeover involving the 49ers Enterprises has intensified over recent months.

Earlier reports indicated strong confidence that a deal could be finalised ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Recently, Rangers and the 49ers consortium released a joint statement to Sky Sports, confirming the progress of discussions.

It read: “Rangers and its existing controlling shareholders are in productive conversations with the two lead members of the Consortium, Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises Global Football Group, about the potential for the Consortium to acquire control of the club and to inject additional capital.

These discussions reflect a shared recognition of the importance of Rangers FC’s long-term direction, ambitions, and management.”

One of the consortium’s first major tasks in Glasgow will be appointing a new permanent manager. Barry Ferguson is currently acting as interim boss after the departure of Philippe Clement.

Ferguson has made it clear he would like the role on a permanent basis and has pledged to improve the club if given the opportunity.

Speaking about his future, Ferguson said: “In terms of managing elsewhere, no.

I enjoyed my role at Rangers before, and if that’s not going to be managing, then hopefully I’ll just go back to that and enjoy what I was doing.

If I get the job, I will make my club a better club. If I don’t get the job, I will still support the club.”

Despite Ferguson’s ambitions, it appears the 49ers have other ideas.

According to a fresh update from The Athletic, Rangers and the 49ers have been actively holding discussions with managerial candidates across Europe ahead of a possible summer appointment.

Managerial Talks Underway in Europe

As relayed by Give Me Sport, technical director Gretar Steinsson has been leading the Rangers-49ers delegation in talks with prospective managers throughout Europe.

While no specific names have been confirmed, several candidates have already been linked with the Ibrox job.

One such name is Jose Mourinho, currently managing Fenerbahce.

Interestingly, Ferguson’s Rangers managed to knock Mourinho’s side out of the Europa League earlier this year, adding a twist to any potential appointment.

Another name mentioned is Marco Rose, formerly of RB Leipzig.

Rose’s ties to the Red Bull football network, and by extension to the 49ers through Leeds United, could make him a logical candidate.

Rose has been without a club since leaving Leipzig in March.

It remains to be seen which direction the 49ers will choose for Rangers’ managerial future.

However, with Steinsson working diligently behind the scenes, it’s clear the new owners are wasting no time in shaping the next era at Ibrox.
