San Francisco 49ers’ rookie kicker Jake Moody, despite some inconsistency during the regular season where he managed to convert 21 out of 25 field goal attempts, faced challenges with missed field goals in both of the team’s NFC Playoff games leading up to Super Bowl LVIII against the Kansas City Chiefs.
However, Moody’s nerves seemed to be under control during the crucial moments of the big game at Allegiant Stadium. In the second quarter, head coach Kyle Shanahan trusted Moody to attempt a 55-yard field goal with the score tied at zero. To everyone’s amazement, Moody successfully made the kick, breaking the Super Bowl record for the longest field goal previously held by Steve Christie of the Buffalo Bills with a 54-yarder.
This impressive feat showcased Moody’s talent and justified the 49ers’ decision to select him in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft from Michigan, despite criticism for parting ways with the legendary kicker Robbie Gould. It proved to be a significant moment of success for the NFC Champions.
