Rangers Close In on £3.9m-per-Year Star as Squad Rebuild Continues
Glasgow Rangers are poised to sign Leicester City defender Conor Coady, who earns £3.9 million per year, in the coming days, according to a fresh transfer update.
The Ibrox outfit, now under the ownership of 49ers Enterprises, have been actively reinforcing the squad ahead of their crucial Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos later this month.
Their recent business includes the official arrival of Lyall Cameron following a pre-contract agreement and the season-long loan signing of Max Aarons from Bournemouth.
Rangers have now secured a permanent deal for midfielder Joe Rothwell from Bournemouth. Rothwell is a familiar figure to manager Russell Martin, having previously worked with him at Southampton.
The 49ers also tracked the midfielder closely during his loan spell at Leeds United last season.
Shortly after Rothwell’s signing, Rangers confirmed the arrival of Emmanuel Fernandez from Peterborough United on a four-year deal.
The young defender, speaking after the announcement, revealed his surprise at the move.
“I am honoured. It is a huge club with a great fanbase, and I believe I can kickstart my career and have a great journey here,” Fernandez said. “I was shocked when I heard about Rangers because it’s such a big club, but this was the place I wanted to be.
I haven’t played at this level before, and there will be a lot of life changes for me, but I’m ready and excited to get started.”
Rangers and the 49ers aren’t finished with their transfer activity, as another experienced defender is expected to join shortly.
According to The Rangers Review, a deal for Conor Coady is advancing well and is anticipated to be completed within days.
Coady is expected to leave Leicester following their relegation from the Premier League. A move to Ibrox would mark the 32-year-old’s first spell outside England.
Coady, a Liverpool academy graduate, has previously played for Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town, Wolves, Everton, and Leicester, and has 10 England caps to his name.
Former manager Tony Pulis endorsed the potential move, saying: “If he ends up at Rangers, he’ll realise it’s a fantastic club with incredible support.
The key will be helping them challenge Celtic — and that’s never easy.”
Should everything proceed as expected, Coady will be available for Rangers’ Champions League qualifiers, potentially forming a new central defensive partnership with Fernandez for the 2025/26 campaign.
