Jason Tindall’s 70-day stint as interim coach at Sheffield United may have been brief, but it was long enough for him to take notice of William Osula.

Former Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom recalled how Tindall spotted glimpses of potential in the young striker, inviting him to train with the first team and continuing to follow his progress since.

Despite his promise, Osula’s path hasn’t been smooth. He played just 134 Premier League minutes for Newcastle last season—only Matt Targett featured less.

Former Derby captain Curtis Davies praised Osula’s tireless effort, noting that while he occasionally misapplied his energy, he was open to coaching and eager to learn.

Davies often mentored him after training, helping refine his movements and decision-making. Osula listened, adapted, and took lessons to heart.

At Newcastle, coaches including Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches, Simon Weatherstone, and Eddie Howe himself have worked closely with Osula to sharpen his skills.

His attitude in training mirrors that of teammate Lewis Hall, whose dedication eventually paid off.

While Osula may benefit from a loan spell for more regular minutes—especially with Alexander Isak ahead in the pecking order and uncertainty surrounding Callum Wilson—Curtis Davies believes Newcastle’s packed fixture schedule could offer Osula chances to break through.

Competing on four fronts increases the need for rotation, and Osula’s pace and unpredictability could give him a real edge.

“If he’s brought on in the Champions League, he could terrify teams,” Davies said. “They won’t know what to expect.

Against compact, tactical sides like those from Italy, he could be a real weapon running in behind.”
