One West Ham Player Performed So Poorly Against Wolves That Lopetegui Will Likely Try to Sell Him – Opinion

West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui was visibly frustrated from the sidelines during last night’s match, and rightly so.

After the game, Lopetegui told reporters that every player has significant work to do in the next three weeks to be ready for the new season.

Although it was just a pre-season friendly, and the primary goal is to build fitness, it was still concerning to see most West Ham players lagging behind Wolves.

The performance was lethargic, and many players on display may not be with the team beyond the end of the 2024/25 season. Some could even be gone before the new campaign starts.

Every player has been given a clean slate and a chance to impress Lopetegui during pre-season. However, several have clearly failed to do so. One player, in particular, has spectacularly wasted his chance, potentially leading to his exit from the club.

There were plenty of poor performers at the EverBank Stadium last night. Aside from a couple of players, notably Mohammed Kudus and Freddie Potts, the overall display was sluggish.

However, one player stood out for his particularly dreadful performance: Maxwel Cornet.

Cornet’s display against Wolves was so poor that it could lead to his departure this summer. He was heavily linked with a move away from West Ham in January but stayed at the London Stadium. Now might be the time for Cornet to move on.

Cornet didn’t look too bad in the pre-season opener against Ferencvaros in Austria a few weeks ago. However, his performances against Dagenham and Redbridge and Wolves have been utterly awful.

His display against Wolves was especially concerning – he was dreadful in every sense.

Cornet was the worst player on the pitch for West Ham against Wolves. He was poor in the final third with no output, but his overall game was more alarming.

There was no tracking back, he was lightweight in challenges, and he offered no outlet for his defenders.

Cornet was a decent player during his time with Lyon and Burnley, but the injury he suffered at the end of 2022 seems to have taken a toll on him physically and mentally.

It’s time for Lopetegui to cut ties with the West Ham winger after his poor performance against Wolves in Jacksonville.

Lopetegui needs to be ruthless and moving on Cornet would send a strong message to the rest of the underperforming squad.
