The NHL Players’ Association has declared that Valeri Nichushkin, a forward for the Colorado Avalanche, will be entering the NHL/NHLPA Player’s Assistance Program for an unspecified duration. This marks his second leave of absence from the team within the past year, the initial instance being during the playoff series against the Seattle Kraken last season.

Nichushkin provided a statement elucidating his decision to enroll in the program, stating, “I have decided to seek assistance and join the player’s assistance program. My aim is to address my issues comprehensively and prevent any adverse outcomes once and for all. I express my gratitude to my wife, family, friends, the Avalanche organization, and all our fans for their understanding and support. I am committed to doing everything possible to return to the ice and rejoin my teammates at the earliest opportunity.”

While the Avalanche never officially disclosed the reason for his earlier departure, a police report alluded to an incident involving an intoxicated woman in his hotel room. However, when the team commenced training camp this season, they welcomed him back, indicating that the matter had been resolved among the player, team, and law enforcement.

Jared Bednar, the head coach of the Avalanche, addressed the uncertainties surrounding Nichushkin at the season’s onset, stating, “Uncertainty would be from an external perspective. I saw Val before I left for the summer, and he was already doing well after taking care of himself and returning. I had no concerns about him.”

The Player’s Assistance Program was established to aid players dealing with challenges such as alcohol and substance abuse, along with other issues that may arise during their NHL careers.
