‘It’s nonsense’ – King blasts international press over £50m+ Tottenham transfer rumors

Former Spurs scout King has accused the Argentinian press of attempting to “stir things up” regarding Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Fabrizio Romano’s post on X (October 9), reports from Argentina claimed there was a £54 million release clause in Romero’s contract with Spurs. However, Romano, a well-respected Italian journalist, confirmed this is untrue.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, King suggested Romero should focus on improving his performances before considering any potential transfer.

“I’m not surprised by anything in the press these days,” King said, adding that agents often supply inaccurate stories to the media, leading to unverified rumors.

He dismissed the reports from Argentina, labeling them as attempts to create drama under the assumption that they would go unnoticed in England.

King also highlighted that many Spurs defenders have been linked with transfers over the years, but stressed that players need to recognize the stature of the club they represent.

“Tottenham is a top club with a magnificent stadium,” he said.

Regarding Romero, King noted that based on his recent performances, there would likely be little interest in signing him at present.

The speculation over Romero’s release clause, whether true or not, still raises concerns for Tottenham.

As King suggested, agents could be fueling interest in the player behind the scenes.

The club is familiar with transfer rumors linking Romero with a move away, as seen in reports from TyC Sports (September 9).

While Spurs will aim to retain the Argentine defender, if they are unsuccessful, they may have a replacement ready in Radu Drăgușin.
