Revealed: Latest update on Mohammed Kudus potentially facing extended ban
Mohammed Kudus faces potential extended ban after red card for violent conduct against Tottenham.
The Football Association (FA) is set to decide within the next 48 hours whether further disciplinary action will be taken against West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus.
Kudus was sent off in the 86th minute of his team’s 4-1 defeat on Saturday after a series of aggressive actions involving Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven, Pape Matar Sarr, and Richarlison.
Kudus, who had earlier scored the opening goal, left three Tottenham players on the ground after a violent outburst.
He first kicked van de Ven in the back, then shoved him in the face.
Kudus continued by pushing Sarr in the head, and Richarlison was knocked over in the chaos that followed.
Initially, Kudus was shown a yellow card by referee Andrew Madley, but after a VAR review, it was upgraded to a straight red.
Violent conduct typically results in a minimum three-game suspension, but Kudus may face a harsher penalty depending on the FA’s assessment of the match officials’ reports.
If the FA decides to impose further sanctions, Kudus’ suspension could be extended to as many as six matches.
For reference, Joey Barton received a nine-game ban after being sent off for three violent incidents during Queens Park Rangers’ match against Manchester City in 2012.
Losing Kudus for an extended period would be a major setback for West Ham.
He has played in all eight of their Premier League matches this season, scoring two goals, following a successful debut campaign in 2023-24, in which he netted 18 goals.
West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui expressed his disappointment in the incident, acknowledging that it was bad for both Kudus and the club.
However, he claimed not to have seen the altercations firsthand.
West Ham, currently stuck in the lower half of the table, will face Manchester United next Sunday. Meanwhile, United have a Europa League group stage match against Fenerbahce on Thursday.
