Dyche reveals what Everton star is still “learning to master” at the club

In a recent interview with Liverpool World (October 27), Dyche emphasized the importance of defensive work for modern centre-forwards, noting that this is an area where Calvert-Lewin still needs to improve.

“We’ve spoken a lot to [Beto] about his defensive responsibilities, and Dom [Calvert-Lewin] is working on it too,” Dyche explained. “In today’s game, it’s essential for strikers to contribute defensively, not just stand upfront and score.

Centre-forwards need to be clever defensively—not necessarily tackling, but positioning themselves to intercept passes, especially from deep-lying midfielders.”

Calvert-Lewin’s inconsistent form has posed challenges for Everton in the attacking third over recent seasons.

Although Everton’s starting lineup appears stronger with him on the field, there remains a sense that he could be offering more to the team.

Recently, Beto managed to secure a point for Everton in their Premier League match against Fulham on October 26, scoring a dramatic equalizer in the 94th minute and maintaining the club’s unbeaten streak.

However, that goal remains his only one in the Premier League this season, a concerning statistic for someone expected to lead Everton’s attack.

Despite a promising upturn in form, Everton has yet to reach their full potential. While Dwight McNeil’s performances have been pivotal in their recent progress, relying solely on him week after week is not sustainable.

Players like Calvert-Lewin need to step up and take on more responsibility to prevent the club’s progress from stalling.

Everton’s current form may have lifted them in the standings, but for continued success, players across the board will need to contribute more consistently.
