“Peril” – BBC reporter comments on Lopetegui’s situation following West Ham’s draw with Everton
Mark Scott believes West Ham’s performance in their 0-0 draw with Everton at the London Stadium did little to ease the pressure on Julen Lopetegui.
The Premier League clash between West Ham and Everton ended in a draw, thanks in large part to Jordan Pickford’s remarkable 93rd-minute save, which denied the Hammers a chance at all three points.
BBC reporter Scott commented that this performance likely did little to ease speculation around Julen Lopetegui’s future at West Ham.
“This was a truly dire game that really reflected the apathy around West Ham at the moment,” Scott wrote on the BBC Sport website (11 November).
He noted that the first half highlighted the lack of a clear identity under Lopetegui, who appeared frustrated as he struggled to communicate effectively with his players from the sidelines.
Although there was a noticeable increase in urgency after halftime, Scott felt it wasn’t enough to silence concerns about Lopetegui’s job security.
“Based on Saturday’s struggles at home to an Everton not exactly on fire themselves, the exasperation among fans may soon turn to worry, with tough games against Newcastle and Arsenal ahead,” Scott added.

Lopetegui’s position has come under scrutiny as West Ham’s season has taken a disappointing turn.
Initially expected to be among the challengers for European spots, the Hammers now find themselves closer to the relegation battle.
Following a big summer transfer window that saw them bring in key players, West Ham’s fortunes haven’t matched expectations.
Injuries to players like Niclas Fullkrug and underwhelming performances from others, including star signing Mohammed Kudus, have added to their struggles.
Currently sitting 14th in the table, West Ham are just five points above the relegation zone.
Although there is still time to climb the standings, it’s unclear if Lopetegui will be given enough time to reverse the team’s trajectory.
The next few weeks will likely be crucial for Lopetegui.
Without a clear improvement, West Ham’s ownership, led by David Sullivan, may consider a managerial change to improve their prospects for the season.
