BBC pundit reveals when West Ham board might consider sacking Lopetegui

West Ham United have had a disappointing season so far, despite notable victories like their win over Manchester United.

This poor form has led to calls from fans for manager Julen Lopetegui’s departure.

Writing for BBC Sport (14 November), former player turned pundit Ashley Williams suggested that if improvements aren’t seen by December, “questions should start to be asked” about Lopetegui’s position.

She noted that, while it takes time to regain form, West Ham has a strong squad capable of better results.

Williams believes the upcoming fixtures provide an opportunity for improvement, and if results don’t pick up, it would be appropriate to consider Lopetegui’s future.

She argued that talk of dismissing him during the international break is premature, given he’s still settling into his role amid high expectations.

According to Williams, West Ham’s primary focus should be on securing Premier League survival, with a spot in European competitions as an added bonus.

“Management takes time,” she stated. “The players need to perform better, but the manager should be given a chance to bring it all together.”

Williams also warned against sacking Lopetegui, as a new manager would inherit a squad built largely under his guidance.

While Williams advocates patience, some argue that Lopetegui should be replaced.

Despite pulling off impressive wins, such as the victory over Manchester United, critics contend that West Ham’s success has relied more on luck than tactical brilliance.

The Hammers spent significantly over the summer, reshaping their squad with signings like Jean-Clair Todibo and Crysencio Summerville.

However, these moves haven’t yielded the desired results, and certain acquisitions, notably Niclas Fullkrug, have struggled to make an impact.

If West Ham chairman David Sullivan chooses not to act soon, he risks missing the chance for a European finish.

Only time will reveal the outcome, but with Lopetegui still at the helm, there is doubt over how much the Hammers’ fortunes can improve.
