Leicester City’s Jannik Vestergaard Faces Criticism for Denmark Performances During International Break
Leicester City’s November international break has produced mixed results for its players.
While Wilfred Ndidi performed impressively for Nigeria, Wout Faes faced criticism after struggling for Belgium.
Currently sitting 15th in the Premier League, Leicester has exceeded expectations following Enzo Maresca’s summer departure to Chelsea, with Steve Cooper stepping in as manager.
However, Danish defender Jannik Vestergaard has found himself on the fringes, struggling to make an impact this season.
Vestergaard Criticized After Denmark’s Nations League Loss
Since the start of the 2024/25 season, Vestergaard has featured in only four Premier League matches, leaving many puzzled by Cooper’s decision to sideline him.
Unfortunately, his return to action with the Danish national team during the UEFA Nations League did little to improve his fortunes.
In Denmark’s match against Spain, Vestergaard was at fault for two crucial goals.
He failed to track Mikel Oyarzabal’s run, allowing the Real Sociedad forward to open the scoring.
Later, a missed interception enabled former Leicester player Ayoze Perez to double Spain’s lead. The Danish defender’s performance drew sharp criticism from the media.
Danish outlet Tipsbladet did not mince words in their assessment, writing:
“Wow, what a mouthful, Vestergaard. It was unrecognizable from the towering defender, who had established himself as a national team profile in 2024 (in a three-man defense).
The nimble and fast Spaniards exposed him with deep passes, intense pressing, and swift movements.
He looked terrible during the 0-1 goal and rarely seemed in control either with the ball or defensively.”
Uncertain Future for Vestergaard
The criticism comes as Vestergaard’s confidence appears to be waning.
Having been omitted from Leicester’s lineup for much of the season, he now faces a bleak outlook both internationally and at the club level.
Although he had recovered from an ankle issue ahead of the internationals, his struggles on the pitch suggest deeper concerns.
With the January transfer window fast approaching, a move away from the King Power Stadium might be the best solution for the 31-year-old defender.
A fresh start elsewhere could help him rebuild his confidence and reignite his career.
