Ian Darke Calls West Ham’s Julen Lopetegui Appointment a “Strange” Move in Pursuit of “Sexy” Football
TV commentator Ian Darke, speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, supports the club’s decision to reassess their plans and appoint Graham Potter.
He praised Potter’s work at Brighton & Hove Albion and believes he can spark a “revolution” at West Ham.
Darke admitted it was unsurprising that things went poorly under former head coach Julen Lopetegui.
He noted that while David Moyes left because it was time for change, Lopetegui’s appointment was always a questionable fit.
“It was a strange appointment for Lopetegui anyway,” Darke said. “Moyes went because everyone felt it was time for a change.
They wanted a more attractive style of football, but Lopetegui had no reputation for that, and the team never gelled under him. So it was no surprise they called it quits.”
Potter’s arrival marks an exciting new chapter, as he was instrumental in building Brighton’s current success.
Darke believes West Ham has found a like-minded coach who was ready to return after a long break from management.
Potter’s appointment was particularly intriguing given his previous reluctance to accept job offers.
However, under the leadership of David Sullivan and his team, he has taken on the challenge at the London Stadium.
West Ham has already shown signs of improvement, delivering a strong performance in their recent trip to Aston Villa on 26 January.
The Hammers face a tough run of fixtures, including Chelsea, Arsenal, and Newcastle in their next five games.
The challenge begins on Monday, 3 February, with a trip to Potter’s former club, Chelsea, where his tenure was less successful.
This upcoming stretch will serve as a crucial test for Potter and his new squad.
