Ange Postecoglou Reacts to Jamie Redknapp’s Remarks After Tottenham’s Anfield Defeat

Ange Postecoglou has dismissed criticism from former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp after Tottenham Hotspur’s heavy defeat at Anfield.

Spurs, holding a one-goal advantage in their League Cup semi-final, were outclassed in a 4-0 loss on Thursday, resulting in a 4-1 aggregate exit.

Cody Gakpo equalized the tie in the first half before Mohamed Salah’s penalty and goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk sealed Liverpool’s place in the final against Newcastle United at Wembley on March 16.

Tottenham failed to register a shot on target, leading Redknapp, a former Spurs player, to remark that he couldn’t recall a team surrendering with less resistance.

However, when informed of Redknapp’s comments, Postecoglou brushed them off.

“I know a lot of people get excited about things like that. People on television are paid to give opinions—that’s their job.

My job isn’t to monitor the media and see what people say; it’s to manage this football team,” Postecoglou stated.

“At the end of the day, everyone is entitled to an opinion. My view is I don’t need to respond. I don’t care if it’s Jamie Redknapp or anyone else.”

Despite dismissing the criticism, Postecoglou admitted disappointment in his players’ inability to rise to the occasion.

“We had a chance to reach a final, and those opportunities don’t come often,” he said. “It’s not just the loss that’s disappointing—it’s a tough place to play, and Liverpool are in fantastic form.

They’re excelling in four competitions, with top players in peak condition.

“But I would have liked us to be more like ourselves than we were tonight. The players understood the opportunity, but sometimes reality doesn’t match expectations.”

Postecoglou acknowledged that Spurs fell short of the required standard.

“We didn’t reach the levels we needed tonight. To give ourselves a chance, we had to be much more aggressive off the ball, and we weren’t,” he admitted.

“We let Liverpool control the game and dictate play. In the end, they were simply too good for us.”

The Spurs boss was particularly frustrated that his team failed to give themselves a real chance to compete.

“This was a great opportunity to reach a final, and we didn’t take it. What’s more disappointing is that we didn’t even give ourselves the chance to take it,” he concluded.
