Newcastle United Concerned Over Anthony Gordon’s Fitness as Emergency Option Eyed

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has hinted that Joe Willock could fill in as an emergency left winger against Manchester City if Anthony Gordon is unavailable.

Gordon missed Newcastle’s 3-2 FA Cup win over Birmingham City due to a quad injury, and his availability for the Etihad Stadium clash remains uncertain.

With Harvey Barnes sidelined and Miguel Almiron recently departing for Atlanta United, Newcastle’s wing options are limited.

Willock, however, stepped up impressively against Birmingham, scoring twice in a performance that thrilled Howe. Speaking to Chronicle Live, Howe said: “It was interesting to see him there.

With Anthony injured, we played Joe in his position on the left, and I thought he did really well. He has the running capacity to play there.

It’s different from his usual role, but he has the pace to take players on and engage in one-on-one situations.”

Willock’s season has been disrupted by muscle injuries, limiting him to just six Premier League starts.

Although he has recovered from last season’s hamstring and Achilles issues, breaking into Newcastle’s midfield—where Joelinton, Bruno Guimarães, and Sandro Tonali have excelled—remains a challenge.

Given this competition, Willock may find more opportunities in advanced roles. Howe added: “He has the technique to move into pockets, cut inside, and shoot with his right foot.

I thought he looked dangerous throughout the game. Even when playing as a midfielder, he often drifts wide, so he’s comfortable in thoseareas.”
