Trevan Sanusi’s Breakthrough Season and Injury Setback

Trevan Sanusi, 17, made his competitive debut for Newcastle United in January’s FA Cup third-round victory over Bromley (3-1).

Coming on as a substitute for Will Osula, he played the final 20 minutes of the match.

An injury to Anthony Gordon could have secured Sanusi a spot on the bench for Newcastle’s next FA Cup fixture against Birmingham City, his former club.

However, the young winger was also struggling with an injury, leading to 17-year-old Sean Neave receiving the call-up instead.

Sanusi has now been sidelined for five weeks and is not expected to return until late April or early May.

On Instagram, he shared his frustration: “Unfortunate to be out for another eight weeks after being out for five.”

This injury could prematurely end what has been a promising season for him.

Newcastle’s U21 team wraps up its campaign in mid-April, while the U18s finish on May 3.

The senior squad’s Premier League season continues until May 25, but with Eddie Howe’s team likely fighting for a European spot, it’s unlikely that Sanusi or other young players will get a late-season call-up.

A Breakthrough Year for Trevan Sanusi

Sanusi had a strong pre-season with Newcastle, participating in the club’s tour of Tokyo and featuring in Sela Cup matches against Girona and Stade Brest.

After his official debut against Bromley, manager Eddie Howe commented on Sanusi’s progress:

“Tre hasn’t been consistently training with us; he’s mainly been with the U23s, but I’ve been monitoring his performances and getting feedback.

He had a good pre-season, returned to the youth setup, and has come back strong.

Today was a big moment for him. I’d love to see him get more opportunities, but that depends on the team’s needs.”

Howe also highlighted Sanusi’s strengths:

“He has standout qualities—he’s confident and always looks to take on defenders one-on-one.

He needs to add physicality because opponents will target him, but he has good balance and a way of riding tackles.

Like most young players, there are areas to improve, particularly his end product. We will continue to work on that.”

Drawing Comparisons to a Fan Favorite

Sanusi’s talent attracted interest from clubs like Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester City before he joined Newcastle from Birmingham City in 2023.

Explaining his decision, Sanusi told NewcastleWorld:

“I saw a big project here with young players breaking into the first team.

Seeing Lewy Miley make his debut, start games, and have an impact inspired me. I’m trying to do the same.”

Given his skill set and flair, it’s no surprise that some have drawn comparisons between Sanusi and former Newcastle favorite Allan Saint-Maximin.

“I’ve seen that comparison,” Sanusi admitted. “Saint-Maximin is a great player I watched even before joining Newcastle.

I saw him just before he left, and I recognize some similarities—both of us are skillful. But I’m focused on being myself, improving my goals and assists.”

He also appreciates the excitement he brings to fans:

“I just try my best. It’s great when the crowd gets excited over a bit of skill, but I’m just playing my game. I’m not focused on fan reactions—if I perform well, they’ll support me.”
