Former Leicester City manager praised as an ‘exceptional leader’ after securing new MLS contract.

Dean Smith departed Leicester in 2023 but has revitalized his career in MLS with Charlotte FC.

Dean Smith, former manager of Aston Villa and Leicester City, has earned a contract extension at Major League Soccer (MLS) club Charlotte in recognition of his impressive leadership.

The 54-year-old has signed a new deal, keeping him at the North Carolina-based team until the 2027 MLS season.

Smith, who previously guided Aston Villa back to the Premier League, took charge of Charlotte in December 2023 after a brief tenure at Leicester City, where he was unable to prevent relegation.

He joined Leicester in April 2023 following Brendan Rodgers’ departure, inheriting a side sitting second-bottom with eight games remaining.

Despite securing nine points, the team was relegated.

However, his time at Charlotte has been marked by significant success.

In his debut season, he led the club to their highest-ever points tally (51), secured their first playoff victory, and helped them achieve the second-best defensive record in the league.

This season, Charlotte has made their strongest-ever start and remains unbeaten at home.

Club owner David Tepper praised Smith’s leadership, stating, “Dean has been an exceptional leader for Charlotte FC, and we are delighted he has signed a new contract.

The club’s recent success reflects his dedication and commitment to excellence both on and off the pitch. We look forward to the future with Dean at the helm.”

Reacting to his contract extension, Smith expressed his gratitude and ambition. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being Charlotte FC’s head coach and am honored to sign a new deal,” he told the club’s website.

“Everyone here shares the vision of making Charlotte a leading force in Major League Soccer.”

Addressing the fans, he added, “You have welcomed our family into this city, and we are truly grateful. Together, we aim to challenge for major trophies every season.”

His extension solidifies Charlotte’s confidence in his leadership as they continue their upward trajectory in MLS.
