Stefan Borson: ‘Leicester City Set for Investigation’ Following Latest Development

Premier League clubs have struggled with profit and sustainability (PSR) regulations in recent years, with Everton receiving an eight-point deduction last season.

Now, Everton may have to pay a significant sum to Burnley, who are seeking compensation, arguing that the breaches negatively impacted them.

Despite being charged by the Premier League, Leicester avoided a points deduction by exploiting a loophole in the regulations.

On 21 March, The Athletic reported that Everton and Leicester are now facing accusations from an anti-gambling organization for violating Gambling Commission regulations.

The allegations relate to promoting gambling companies that are no longer licensed in the UK, yet still accessible to UK users due to weak restrictions.

The Coalition to End Gambling Ads has contacted both clubs regarding their shirt sponsors, Stake.com (Everton) and BC.Game (Leicester).

The organization has urged the Gambling Commission to take action against them.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider that an investigation into the issue is necessary.

From the 2026-27 season onward, Premier League clubs will be prohibited from signing new front-of-shirt sponsorship deals with gambling companies, following a collective agreement to phase out such partnerships.

Everton and Leicester Could Receive Legal Boost

However, Borson doubts that any investigation will lead to significant consequences.

He told Football Insider:

“There would have to be an investigation, but I assume they have already reviewed the rules.

“All clubs involved must have analyzed the situation.

“They are still accepting sponsorship money and promoting gambling brands that are unavailable in the UK, so I suspect they have ensured compliance.

“I don’t think there’s an issue here, and I believe they’ve done nothing wrong.

“Lobbyists may push this story, but my instinct is that it won’t amount to anything.”

Everton Could See £25m Koni De Winter Bid Accepted

According to Football Insider (30 March), Everton could secure the signing of Koni De Winter as they seek defensive reinforcements this summer.

Genoa are reportedly seeking around £25 million for the 22-year-old defender. Wolves and Inter Milan are also interested in the Belgian international.

De Winter, who permanently joined Genoa from Juventus last summer following a successful loan spell in 2023-24, has scored three goals in 19 appearances this season.
