Leicester City Target Russell Martin as One of Four Candidates to Succeed Ruud van Nistelrooy

Leicester City are reportedly interested in former Southampton manager Russell Martin as they consider options for their managerial role ahead of their likely return to the Championship.

With City sitting 15 points behind 17th-placed Wolves and only eight games remaining, relegation preparations are already underway.

According to The Sun, Martin is among the names being considered by Leicester’s hierarchy as they plan for a swift return to the Premier League.

Martin led Southampton to promotion last season via the play-offs, defeating Leeds.

However, he was dismissed in December after securing only five points from 16 matches.

Despite that poor run, his commitment to a possession-based style of play has earned him admirers—particularly among clubs seeking a progressive tactical approach, as Leicester did when appointing Enzo Maresca in 2023.

Last season, Martin’s Southampton side averaged 66% possession in the Championship—more than Maresca’s Leicester, who held 62% on average.

This tactical identity may align well with Leicester’s vision moving forward.

In addition, The Sun claims Martin is also attracting attention from the City Football Group, which includes Manchester City and several affiliated clubs worldwide.

The 39-year-old is reportedly being considered for a coaching role at one of their overseas teams.

Another name mentioned is Sean Dyche. The former Burnley and Everton boss has long been admired by Leicester and currently lives in the Midlands.

He is out of work and could be a practical candidate, though his pragmatic and direct style of play contrasts sharply with Martin’s possession-based philosophy and may not align with Leicester’s recent approach.

Leicester have also been linked to Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior and Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl over the past month.

Meanwhile, serious doubts surround Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future at the club following a disastrous run of form.

Leicester have lost 14 of their last 15 Premier League games and have not scored in seven consecutive matches.

A defeat to Newcastle on Monday would see them match their all-time record of eight straight losses.
