Pundit’s Opinion: Sunderland Star Would Be an Ideal Signing for Tottenham
Archie Gray has been a standout performer in Tottenham's otherwise bleak season, and Spurs may target Championship talent once more this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur’s domestic season has been a disaster, although they still have a shot at securing a trophy through the Europa League.
However, failing to win that competition would likely lead to the dismissal of manager Ange Postecoglou and ensure that Spurs miss out on European football for the next season.
The club’s struggles can mainly be attributed to a lack of quality in the squad, despite efforts by players like Gray, who has arguably been their standout performer this season.
Signed from Leeds after a breakout campaign, Gray’s impact has been notable, and Tottenham could look to make a similar move in the upcoming summer transfer window.
One player that has been linked with a move to Tottenham is Sunderland’s Chris Rigg, with reports suggesting Spurs made a £37million bid for the 17-year-old.
However, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking to Tottenham News, expressed uncertainty over the reported transfer fee while outlining why Rigg would be a good fit for the club.
He stated, “I’m not sure about the amount, but he’s the type of player Tottenham typically signs.
When you look at the club’s history and recruitment strategy, it’s clear they’ve signed players like Archie Gray from Leeds, and look at the impact he’s had.”
Robinson acknowledged that Gray was thrust into the first team unexpectedly and played more than anticipated due to unforeseen circumstances.
Nevertheless, he believes Rigg fits the profile of players Tottenham typically targets, though the price Sunderland would demand remains unclear.
“If Sunderland are promoted to the Premier League, the conversation around Rigg’s transfer might change,” Robinson added.
“Even so, whether Sunderland stay in the Championship or move up, he’s the kind of player Tottenham usually pursues.”
While signing Rigg would be a smart addition to Tottenham’s growing pool of young talent, there is an argument that a 17-year-old may not be able to make an immediate impact, especially with Spurs’ underperformance this season.
Given the high asking price, Tottenham might be better off using those funds elsewhere, focusing on more immediate solutions to improve the team.
Ultimately, recruitment will be crucial for Tottenham in the summer if they hope to avoid repeating the disappointments of the current season.
