Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future at Leicester City is now uncertain following a historic low.

The Foxes recently set an unwanted 141-year record by losing eight consecutive home games without scoring, intensifying pressure on the Dutchman.

Football journalist Graeme Bailey has suggested van Nistelrooy could soon depart, prompting speculation over potential replacements.

Liam Rosenior and Danny Röhl are among the names in contention, but the surprise candidate emerging is Russell Martin.

Following his dismissal from Southampton, Martin has been linked with the Leicester job, primarily due to his tactical resemblance to former manager Enzo Maresca.

This potential appointment could be particularly appealing to Harry Winks.

Winks, who thrived under Maresca’s possession-based system, would likely relish the opportunity to work with Martin.

A crucial figure in last season’s Championship-winning side, Winks played in all but one league game, becoming a central component in Leicester’s dominant style.

However, things have since gone downhill. Despite featuring regularly under Steve Cooper, Winks never seemed to fully connect with the former boss and was reportedly among the players seen celebrating shortly after Cooper’s departure.

A similar disconnect appears to exist with van Nistelrooy.

In contrast, Martin’s philosophy could bring the best out of the 29-year-old midfielder.

Known for emphasizing control and tempo, Martin’s tactics would align closely with Winks’ strengths, allowing him to dictate play and rediscover the rhythm that defined his game last season.

Statistics from the 2023/24 season compared to the current campaign further underline Winks’ dip in form.

Once viewed as a pivotal figure in Leicester’s Premier League survival hopes, he has now featured in over 50% fewer games.

His output has declined in key areas such as goals, shots, and overall passing.

Although his assists and pass completion rate have slightly improved, these numbers haven’t translated into improved results for the team.

All signs point to Russell Martin as a manager who could reignite Winks’ form and possibly steady the ship at Leicester—if the club decides to part ways with van Nistelrooy.
