Everton Prospect Harrison Armstrong Impressing During Loan Spell at Derby County
Armstrong has featured in three Premier League matches for Everton this season before moving to Derby County on loan during the January transfer window.
The 18-year-old midfielder caught attention early in the year by providing an assist in Everton’s 2-0 FA Cup win against League One side Peterborough in January.
Since joining Derby, Armstrong has made a noticeable impact. He scored in the Rams’ thrilling 3-2 victory over Plymouth Argyle in the Championship on 15 March.
His contributions have been vital in Derby’s fight to avoid relegation back to League One, with his performances showing maturity beyond his years.
Armstrong has now made 10 Championship appearances for Derby, including a recent outing against promotion hopefuls Burnley on 8 April.
His steady development has earned praise from Derby manager John Eustace, who spoke highly of the young midfielder in an interview with The Athletic. “He’s been excellent,” Eustace said.
“He’s maturing into a very good player. There’s still a lot for him to learn, but he’s only 18. That was his seventh start, and his level of concentration is impressive.”
Eustace highlighted Armstrong’s defensive strengths, technical ability, and growing influence in build-up play. “He’s got a calming influence on the team,” he added.
“He knows when to slow the game down and where to place the ball. You can tell he’s being educated very well. Harrison’s going to have a huge future.”
These glowing remarks reflect well on Everton’s academy, showcasing its role in producing promising young talent.
While Armstrong has yet to establish himself in Everton’s first team—having made only six senior appearances—his loan spell is providing him with crucial experience and development opportunities.
Notably, Armstrong hasn’t played for Everton since David Moyes returned to manage the club, replacing Sean Dyche.
As the season ends, Moyes will have an important decision to make about whether Armstrong will become a regular part of the squad next season.
Given his current form and influence at Derby, it’s likely that the Rams—and Eustace in particular—will be interested in extending his loan deal.
That decision could hinge on Derby’s success in avoiding relegation, with Armstrong’s role in their campaign growing ever more important.
