Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Angers goalkeeper Yahia Fofana ahead of the summer transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.
The Magpies have sent scouts to monitor the 24-year-old in France as they aim to add competition for Nick Pope at St James’ Park.
While Burnley’s James Trafford is currently the top target, Fofana is being considered as a more affordable alternative to the England international.
Fofana, who moved to Angers from Le Havre in 2022, has just over a year remaining on his contract, which expires in summer 2026.
His recent performances in Ligue 1 have caught the eye, with O’Rourke describing him as a goalkeeper with “real potential.”
This season, the Ivory Coast international has made 29 appearances, keeping six clean sheets and conceding 46 goals.
He’s viewed by some as one of the top young goalkeepers in Europe.
Although Newcastle have previously been linked with Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale, they appear to be focusing on younger goalkeeping options, with both Fofana and Trafford highlighted as possible additions.
The potential fee for Fofana is still unclear, but Trafford is reportedly valued around £30 million.
That valuation could push Newcastle to pursue Fofana more seriously, especially as they plan a busy transfer window.
Following the resolution of their Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) concerns, Eddie Howe is expected to lead an active summer of recruitment.
Reinforcements are being targeted across several positions, with a centre-back, a right-sided winger, and a striker all on the club’s radar.
The search for a forward comes as Callum Wilson is likely to depart on a free transfer at the end of the season.
