Newcastle United's PSR Struggles Led to Yankuba Minteh Sale
Yankuba Minteh’s Newcastle United stint was brief and unusual.
Bought for £7 million, sold without playing a single game, and generating a £26 million profit, his time on Tyneside ended almost as quickly as it began.
Newcastle were compelled to offload the promising Gambian winger due to financial pressures, a move few at the club truly desired.
Brighton & Hove Albion swooped in, and Minteh has since become a fan favorite under Fabian Hurzeler.
His performances on the south coast have justified the faith placed in him, with regular appearances and growing influence.
Earlier this season, Minteh scored at St James’ Park and offered a gesture of respect to Newcastle fans, clasping his hands as if in apology.

Speaking to The Athletic, he explained: “My agent told me they wanted to sell. I said: ‘OK, that’s fine.

During his loan at Feyenoord, Minteh focused on proving he was Premier League-ready.
“It didn’t matter if it was Newcastle, Bournemouth or Brighton — I just wanted to play in the Premier League,” he said.
“Now that I’m at Brighton, I’ve really fallen in love with the club. I’m happy and settled here.”
He also expressed understanding about Newcastle’s decision: “This is football. You think you’ll stay at a club forever, then another team comes in and you move. I have no hard feelings.”
Minteh’s departure, alongside that of academy graduate Elliot Anderson, was part of Newcastle’s scramble to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) last season.
Manager Eddie Howe publicly stated his desire to keep both players but acknowledged financial regulations forced the club’s hand.
Now thriving at Brighton, Minteh has racked up 11 goal contributions across 31 appearances this campaign.
His performances highlight the potential Newcastle once saw in him — and what they had to reluctantly give up to balance the books.
