Graham Potter's Recent Team Selections Raise Concerns at West Ham United
Describing Graham Potter’s decisions as merely “questionable” is far too generous.
A more accurate term might be “clueless,” particularly when it comes to selecting starting lineups and making tactical changes during matches.
A prime example of this was when Potter decided to start Carlos Soler and James Ward-Prowse together in central midfield for our match against Southampton. The outcome was a disaster.
West Ham’s overall performance that day was abysmal.
Despite taking an early lead, the team immediately went into a passive mode, sitting deep and allowing Southampton to dominate possession.
One moment that summed up the team’s poor mentality was Vladimir Coufal attempting to shield the ball by the corner flag late in the match, rather than pushing forward or maintaining control.
It came as no surprise when Southampton equalised in the final minutes. Frankly, it was exactly what West Ham deserved based on their performance.
Soler, who joined the Hammers on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, has been a major disappointment.
At 28, the Spain international has failed to adapt to the demands of Premier League football.
Reports suggest West Ham have no intention of making his move permanent—and rightly so.
That said, Potter’s recent decisions suggest otherwise. If Soler truly isn’t in West Ham’s long-term plans, then giving him game time makes little sense.
It’s a wasted opportunity that could instead go to a promising young talent. Lewis Orford, for instance, could benefit significantly from minutes on the pitch.
Unless, of course, Potter is considering keeping Soler at the London Stadium beyond this season.
There are whispers that West Ham have the option to sign Soler permanently for £16.5 million.
However, based on his performances, even that price feels excessive. He has shown little to suggest he’s suited for the pace and intensity of the English top flight.
It’s baffling that Soler is still getting minutes, and if Potter truly is contemplating a permanent deal, it would be a major error in judgement.
West Ham cannot afford another costly mistake. Soler must return to PSG, and the focus should shift to players who actually have a future at the club.
