As Everton Enter a Pivotal Stage, David Moyes May Oppose Keeping One Player
David Moyes has spent his first three months at Everton carefully analysing the squad and identifying areas for improvement.
The Scotsman has shown patience, choosing not to rush into the January market in order to save funds.
However, with the financial backing of The Friedkin Group now in place, Moyes is expected to act in the summer.
One area that clearly needs attention is the right-back position, and recent comments from Moyes suggest he lacks trust in Nathan Patterson.
The 23-year-old’s time at Everton has been troubled, largely due to injuries, which have prevented him from enjoying a consistent run in the team.
Despite this, Moyes had called on Patterson to step up, but the defender has yet to impress in the limited opportunities he’s been given.
The situation became more pressing following James Tarkowski’s injury, which could force Jake O’Brien to shift from right-back to centre-back ahead of their clash with Chelsea.
That potential move creates a vacancy at right-back, yet Moyes didn’t seem confident about slotting Patterson in.
In his pre-match press conference, he said: “It could weaken the side down the right (if O’Brien moves).
He’s done the role well, he’s not made us more open. To move him can be a problem, it looks like he’ll have the opportunity to play centre-back.”
Moyes’ reluctance to use Patterson in his natural role raises serious questions about the Scot’s plans for the former Rangers man.
Since arriving for £16 million in 2022, Patterson has made just 47 league appearances over three seasons — an average of just over 15 per campaign.
While he is reportedly a positive figure in the dressing room, his limited availability and underwhelming performances have been concerning.
Patterson even looked for an exit during Sean Dyche’s tenure, and nothing so far under Moyes suggests his situation is improving.
The fact that Moyes continues to favour O’Brien, a natural centre-back, at right-back is telling.
Given the circumstances, Everton may be wise to consider selling Patterson in the summer.
His struggles with form and fitness, combined with Moyes’ apparent lack of confidence, suggest his future at the club is uncertain.
