Peter Taylor, former Leicester City boss and England caretaker manager, has been appointed head coach of Canvey Island, a club competing in the seventh tier of English football.

This marks a return home for the 72-year-old, who began his football journey over 50 years ago in Canvey Island’s youth setup.

Taylor’s distinguished managerial career includes a brief spell leading the England national team in a 2000 friendly against Italy, during which he handed David Beckham his first captaincy.

After nearly two years away from the dugout following his time at Maldon and Tiptree, Taylor is back in management.

Canvey Island, who finished 17th in the Isthmian Premier League last season, welcomed Taylor with enthusiasm.

A club statement read: “The board are pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Taylor as first team manager.

Peter returns to the club where he started his career as a youth team player. He has always kept in contact with Canvey and is delighted to be returning.”

Taylor managed Leicester City from 2000 to 2001, briefly leading them to the top of the Premier League before a sharp decline in form saw them end the season in 13th place. He was dismissed early the following season.

His extensive managerial career has since taken him to clubs including Brighton, Hull City, and Crystal Palace, highlighting his experience and adaptability in English football.
