However, there’s some bad news regarding the potential sale of Nayef Aguerd. Hopes of offloading the Moroccan centre-back to Real Sociedad appear to have collapsed due to fresh developments from Spain.

Only a few weeks ago, Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay had suggested there was still a possibility of making Aguerd’s loan move permanent.

But an injury sustained shortly after the early-May Basque derby against Athletic Club has thrown a wrench into those plans.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Aguerd will miss the final game of the La Liga season against Real Madrid and has likely played his last game for Sociedad.

“Aguerd has already played his final match as a ‘txuri urdin’, the derby at Anoeta,” the report states. “He won’t be able to bid farewell on the pitch.”

In total, Aguerd will have featured in just one of Sociedad’s last 11 La Liga matches, leaving his future uncertain.

Back in London, Graham Potter would reportedly be pleased to see Aguerd return to West Ham.

As journalist Graeme Bailey revealed in April, Potter believes the defender could still play a valuable role in the team.

However, Aguerd himself has shown little interest in staying in England. His £30 million move from Rennes hasn’t worked out as planned, and his preference appears to be continuing his career elsewhere in Europe.

“Potter is keen to have him back, believing Aguerd could be a good fit,” Bailey said. “But the player simply doesn’t want to be in England—his reluctance isn’t personal toward Potter.”

Defensively, West Ham have shown some improvement under Potter, conceding fewer goals than the 74 they let in last season under David Moyes.

Still, with 61 goals conceded, tightening up at the back remains a priority.

Elsewhere, West Ham are actively pursuing Burnley defender CJ Egan-Riley.

However, they face competition from Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, who are leveraging their ties to Chelsea through the BlueCo ownership group to tempt the former Manchester City academy product to France.
