Leeds United Hold Talks Over £150,000-a-Week “Monster” as 49ers Eye Premier League Reinforcements
Leeds United and their owners, the 49ers Enterprises, have reportedly held internal discussions regarding a move for Kalvin Phillips, a £150,000-a-week midfielder described as a “monster” and represented by the same agent as Jayden Bogle.
After an impressive 2024/25 campaign that saw Leeds earn promotion from the Championship, chairman Paraag Marathe is preparing to strengthen the squad for a return to the Premier League.
Earlier this month, Marathe confirmed Daniel Farke would remain in charge and committed to investing in the squad to ensure competitiveness at the top level.
“Together we are going to build the best squad we can, with every penny we are allowed to spend to be competitive in the Premier League. We are going to attack the transfer market and it’s something I’m really excited about,” he said.
In addition to their plans at Leeds, the 49ers have also completed a takeover of Scottish giants Rangers, with Marathe now serving as vice chairman at Ibrox.
The takeover has sparked speculation about potential player movement between the clubs, including reported Leeds interest in Rangers’ central midfielder Nicolas Raskin.
However, Raskin isn’t the only midfield target being monitored.
According to The Daily Mail, Leeds have held internal discussions about re-signing Kalvin Phillips, who left Elland Road for Manchester City in a £42 million deal in 2022.
Since joining City, Phillips has struggled to find regular playing time, resulting in loan spells at West Ham United and Ipswich Town.
Despite his limited involvement over the past few seasons, Leeds are considering bringing the 28-year-old back.
Another midfield option being looked at is Julian Weigl of Borussia Monchengladbach, a player known to Farke from their time together in Germany.
The manager is reportedly keen on reuniting with the 29-year-old.
Phillips, who is on a significant wage and is represented by CAA Stellar—the same agency as several Leeds players including Dan James, Joe Rodon, Wilfried Gnonto, and Patrick Bamford—could pose a risk.
He recently underwent surgery on his Achilles and is expected to be sidelined until August, ruling him out for most, if not all, of pre-season.
With limited match fitness over the last three years and strong competition in midfield from Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev, and Ao Tanaka, signing Phillips may not be the most strategic move.
Still, given his reputation and past performances, the potential return of the “monster” remains a situation to monitor—though his injury status might ultimately deter the 49ers from making a move.
