Everton Set Sights on Villarreal Striker Thierno Barry, per The Athletic
After several seasons competing for European qualification, Everton’s standards dropped sharply, leaving them battling relegation in recent years.
The struggle extended into the first half of the recently concluded campaign, but the situation improved dramatically after the mid-season appointment of David Moyes as manager.
Ultimately, Everton secured a 13th-place finish in the Premier League with 48 points—an outcome that saw them finish above both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Now, according to The Athletic, Everton’s new owners are prepared to support Moyes in the upcoming transfer window. Their top priority is to sign a new striker to provide competition for Beto.
While Dominic Calvert-Lewin remains at the club, he is expected to leave as a free agent at the end of the month.
Everton have shortlisted two key targets—Villarreal’s Ilias Akhomach Barry and Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade.
Their initial target was Liam Delap, but the youngster has opted to join Chelsea, rejecting a move to Merseyside.
Barry joined Villarreal from FC Basel last summer for a fee of around £13 million.
With four years remaining on his current contract, the Spanish club are expected to demand a significantly higher fee if he is to leave.
The 22-year-old had a strong debut season in La Liga, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists across 25 starts.
His contributions helped Villarreal qualify for next season’s Champions League by finishing in the top five.
Notably, five clubs each from the Premier League and La Liga will participate in Europe’s premier competition next season, with Tottenham qualifying through their Europa League triumph.
Standing at 6ft 5in, Barry is physically imposing, quick, strong in aerial duels, and effective in hold-up play—traits that suit Moyes’ preference for a traditional target man.
His skill set makes him a strong fit for the style of play Everton are expected to adopt under Moyes.
Meanwhile, Woltemade is another exciting option, having impressed last season with his goal-scoring form. At 6ft 6in, he also offers a significant physical presence up front.
Both Barry and Woltemade would be capable replacements for Calvert-Lewin, and landing either striker would be a significant boost to Everton’s attacking options ahead of the new campaign.
