Spurs Close in on Thomas Frank and Eye £20m English Midfield Talent
Tottenham Hotspur are still without a new manager following Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal last Friday.
Thomas Frank is reportedly the frontrunner to replace him, and one report suggests he has already urged Spurs to target Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo as a transfer priority.
Despite this, not every transfer target on Tottenham’s radar appears to be linked to Frank.
The club is showing interest in a promising young midfielder currently playing in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, indicating a broader recruitment strategy.
Spurs have a recent history of investing in young midfielders.
Both Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall were signed as teenagers last summer and managed to earn a decent amount of playing time during their first seasons at the club.
One new name being linked is Hayden Hackney of Middlesbrough. According to The Sun, Tottenham are closely monitoring Hackney following Middlesbrough’s unsuccessful promotion push.
Earlier reports claimed Spurs were in competition with two European clubs for his signature.
Hackney, 22, is currently representing England at the UEFA U21 Euro Finals in Slovakia, where Tottenham scouts are said to be assessing his performances.
Middlesbrough have set an estimated valuation of £20 million but are reluctant to sell. That price may increase depending on how Hackney performs on the international stage.
Porto made a move for Hackney in January with a £9 million offer, which Middlesbrough turned down.
German side Stuttgart and Premier League club Crystal Palace are also reportedly interested.
However, Tottenham appear to be taking a serious look, with their scouts actively following the player.
Hackney is a product of Middlesbrough’s academy and has spent his career there apart from a loan at Scunthorpe United.
A defensive midfielder by trade, his contribution last season included five goals and three assists across 43 league matches — respectable numbers for his position.
Although he now plays for the England U21 team, Hackney previously featured twice for Scotland’s U21s, qualifying through his Edinburgh-born mother.
Most recently, he scored in a 4-2 victory against Portugal. He may feature again on Thursday when England face Czechia, with the match airing in the UK on Channel 4.
