As Newcastle United continue their pursuit of Joao Pedro, reports suggest they may be shifting focus toward a proven Premier League performer who already boasts a hat-trick at St James’ Park.

Newcastle Eyeing Joao Pedro Transfer

After being restricted from making major moves in the last two transfer windows due to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), Newcastle United are preparing for a more active summer.

Among their top targets are Brighton & Hove Albion’s Joao Pedro and Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga.

Both players could significantly enhance Eddie Howe’s squad as they prepare for a return to Champions League football, which will demand greater squad depth and quality.

Joao Pedro, in particular, could provide crucial support when Alexander Isak is unavailable. Injuries to both Isak and Callum Wilson last season meant that Anthony Gordon had to play out of position as a central striker.

Bringing in Pedro could solve that issue while also offering a stylistic complement to Isak.

While Pedro may not have matched Isak’s goal tally, he showed impressive efficiency in front of goal, consistently outperforming his expected goals (xG).

That suggests untapped potential that could flourish further in a Newcastle side that creates more attacking opportunities.

The Brazilian could thrive under Howe’s attacking system and develop into a more prolific forward given the right service.

However, signing Pedro won’t come cheap. Brighton are reportedly demanding up to £60 million for the 22-year-old, which may prompt Newcastle to consider more cost-effective alternatives.

Justin Kluivert Emerges as Cheaper Alternative

One such option is Bournemouth’s Justin Kluivert, who is now reportedly on Newcastle’s radar.

According to Caught Offside, the Magpies are interested in the Dutch winger, though they may face competition from Manchester United.

Kluivert’s estimated price tag is around €55 million (approximately £47 million), making him a more financially viable target than Pedro.

Kluivert already gave Newcastle fans a firsthand look at his quality last season when he scored a memorable hat-trick at St James’ Park.

That performance was one of two hat-tricks he scored during the campaign, finishing the season with a respectable 12 Premier League goals – his best return in a top-flight season.

Following his standout display against Newcastle, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola was full of praise. “Justin is playing with a lot of confidence.

His first goal was key—it came from a good transition. He had the option to pass left or right but chose to shoot, and it was an excellent decision and finish,” Iraola said.

“He also scored another fantastic goal that was disallowed, but that effort was beautiful as well. Then he assisted Dango. Beyond his pressing work, he’s now contributing goals and assists, which is always welcome.”
