Newcastle United’s return to the Champions League next season gives manager Eddie Howe a golden opportunity to attract high-calibre players to St James’ Park.
One of the names reportedly on their radar is Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho, who is widely expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.
Sancho, who spent time on loan at Chelsea this past season, could be available for around £25 million. He managed five goals and eight assists in his time with the Blues, offering depth and quality on the flanks.
Securing the former Borussia Dortmund star would certainly be a statement of ambition from Newcastle.
However, while boosting the wide areas could help the squad, other positions arguably require more urgent attention.
One such position is goalkeeper. Newcastle conceded 47 goals in the Premier League last season — the most among the top five teams. Strengthening between the posts ahead of another Champions League campaign is not just logical, it’s essential.
Reports from Spain suggest Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen could be on the move, following the emergence of Joan Garcia.
A number of elite clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Manchester City, and Juventus, have shown interest in the German international. Newcastle, too, are entering the race for his signature.
Securing Ter Stegen would be a remarkable achievement for Howe and Newcastle, arguably more impactful than signing Sancho.
While Sancho’s potential is undeniable, his form in recent seasons has been inconsistent. At Manchester United, he managed just 12 goals in 83 appearances.
His loan spell at Chelsea also failed to reignite his career; despite making 41 appearances, he netted only five times. Chelsea ultimately decided against making his move permanent.
Considering Newcastle already have attacking options like Harvey Barnes, Anthony Gordon, and Jacob Murphy, splashing out on Sancho — especially with his recent struggles — may not be the wisest move. The club must weigh the potential reward against the evident risks.
In contrast, strengthening the goalkeeper position with a world-class player like Ter Stegen seems a more pragmatic and strategic investment.
Nick Pope, who featured in 35 games last season, managed just eight clean sheets, while Martin Dubravka kept five from ten domestic appearances.
For a club with Champions League ambitions, that level of output may not be sufficient.
Ter Stegen, though sidelined for parts of the 2023/24 season, remains a top-tier goalkeeper. He featured just nine times for Barcelona last term and kept only one clean sheet.
Yet, over his decade-long stint with the La Liga giants, he has amassed over 400 appearances and registered an impressive 175 clean sheets.
Even during his limited involvement in 2023/24, his performance was strong. In 28 La Liga matches, he averaged 2.7 saves per game, boasted a 74% save rate, and successfully executed 100% of his runs out. Those statistics underline his consistency and class.
Although his contract at Barcelona runs until 2028, meaning a sizable fee may be required, it’s not yet clear what manager Hansi Flick would demand to sanction a sale.
While Sancho’s arrival would be notable, signing Ter Stegen would send an even louder message of Newcastle’s intentions to become a European force.
He would not only bring experience and leadership but also offer a significant upgrade in a crucial position — the kind of signing that could make a real difference next season.
