The future of Dominican Republic international Junior Firpo has dominated Leeds United’s summer transfer narrative, as the left-back appears set to depart with just days remaining on his current contract.

Firpo is reportedly close to sealing a return to Real Betis, the club where he began his professional career.

The Spanish side have offered the 28-year-old a three-year contract, and with only 10 days left on his deal at Elland Road, a reunion now seems imminent.

Although Leeds made an attempt to retain him with a contract extension, Firpo looks poised to move on. As a result, the need to secure a new left-back has quickly become a top priority for the club this summer.

Hugo Bueno emerges as a potential replacement

Replacing Firpo will be no easy task. He was a standout performer for Daniel Farke’s team last season, contributing an impressive 10 assists—the highest total for any defender in the Championship.

Despite his strong impact, Leeds have seemingly accepted the likelihood of his exit and are already exploring alternatives.

According to Marca (20 June, page 17), Wolves defender Hugo Bueno has been identified as a potential target.

Bueno, 22, is currently representing Spain at the U21 Euros and spent the previous season on loan with Dutch side Feyenoord, where he made 30 appearances in what was widely viewed as a successful spell.

Feyenoord are expected to compete with Leeds for his signature, especially given how well he performed in the Eredivisie. However, the Whites remain hopeful of landing the promising full-back.

Leeds are eager to build a competitive squad for Farke ahead of the new season, but they may need to exercise patience when it comes to pursuing Bueno.

Given his recent loan and ongoing international duty, discussions with Wolves over his future are likely still pending.
