Leeds United’s Summer Transfer Moves: Strengthening for Premier League Survival

Leeds United have made a proactive start to the summer transfer window as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.

Determined to avoid an immediate drop, the club has already secured key signings to strengthen both their attack and defence.

Their first arrival was forward Lukas Nmecha, who joined as a free agent from Wolfsburg following the expiry of his contract.

Shortly after, manager Daniel Farke bolstered his defensive line with the acquisition of Slovenian international Jaka Bijol from Serie A side Udinese.

The 26-year-old centre-back made 34 appearances in the Italian top flight last season and brings valuable experience from a major European league.

However, Leeds are not stopping there. They are close to finalising a deal for another central defender, Sebastiaan Bornauw, also from Wolfsburg.

The Belgian international is reportedly set to join for a fee of £5.13 million. At 6’3″, Bornauw adds height and physicality to Leeds’ backline and offers depth behind Bijol, Joe Rodon, and Pascal Struijk.

He boasts 140 Bundesliga appearances and three Champions League outings. Known for his aerial prowess—winning 62% of his duels last season—he could be a valuable asset at both ends of the pitch.

However, his injury record, including 18 missed games last season, suggests he may serve more as a rotational option than a consistent starter.

In addition to Bornauw, Leeds are eyeing a move for another Bundesliga talent: Anthony Caci of Mainz.

According to BILD, both Leeds and Fulham are interested, but Leeds are believed to be in pole position due to their ability to offer regular game time.

Mainz value the French defender at approximately £8.5 million, and Leeds are expected to submit a formal bid soon.

Caci, 28, would be a more exciting addition than Bornauw. He brings extensive top-level experience, with 107 Ligue 1 appearances and 97 in the Bundesliga.

Crucially, he has remained largely injury-free, missing just two matches since the start of the 2020/21 season.

A versatile and attack-minded full-back, Caci has mainly featured on the left but is also comfortable on the right.

Over his time with Strasbourg and Mainz, he has delivered 23 assists, including seven last season, and ranked highly among full-backs in expected assists (xA) with 7.88.

His creativity and consistent performances suggest he could be an ideal replacement for Junior Firpo, who left the club following the expiry of his contract.

Overall, while Bornauw would add experience and depth, Caci represents a more dynamic and reliable option.

If Leeds secure both deals, they would significantly enhance their defensive options as they aim to remain competitive in the Premier League.
