Newcastle United have maintained a long-standing interest in Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, having tracked him for over a year.

The Magpies came close to securing his signature last summer but pulled out of the deal at the last minute.

Now, as the transfer window opens once more, Trafford is again being strongly linked with a move to St James’ Park.

According to Fabrizio Romano, personal terms between Newcastle and Trafford have already been agreed, so that part of the deal is not expected to pose any issues.

However, the stumbling block remains the transfer fee. Burnley are reportedly demanding £40 million for their prized asset, while Newcastle’s initial bid of £25 million has been turned down.

Although bringing in a new goalkeeper isn’t Newcastle’s top priority this summer, fans are excited about the potential signing of Trafford.

The 22-year-old is seen as a long-term solution between the posts and a possible first-choice option for years to come.

Despite his youth, Trafford has already demonstrated the potential to become a top-tier shot-stopper.

Trafford had a challenging debut campaign in the Premier League, conceding 62 goals in 28 appearances as Burnley were relegated under Vincent Kompany.

He eventually lost his starting position to Arijanet Muric. However, under the guidance of new manager Scott Parker, Trafford and Burnley staged an impressive comeback in the Championship last season.

Burnley’s promotion campaign was defined by their exceptional defensive record. The club conceded just 16 goals in the league, with Trafford playing a central role.

He kept an incredible 29 clean sheets in 45 matches and never conceded more than one goal in any Championship fixture.

Despite finishing second to Leeds United, Burnley secured their return to the Premier League with several weeks to spare.

Parker has heaped praise on Trafford for his development and performances throughout the season. Speaking to the Burnley Express, Parker said:

“After a hard season last year and an early part of this year, where there were some ups and downs, I’ve seen a young boy grow into a man and his quality is undeniable – everyone has seen that.

I was quoted in saying that he’s a world-class keeper, which he is, and there is no doubt that I see him as a future England keeper. He’s been incredible.”

If the move to Newcastle goes through, Trafford will likely face stiff competition from Nick Pope, who reclaimed the number one spot from Martin Dubravka after recovering from an injury in December.

While Slovakian international Dubravka may depart if Trafford arrives, Pope—who has just a year left on his contract—could stay and compete for the starting role. He has recently been linked with a potential move to Leeds United.

As negotiations continue, Newcastle fans will be hopeful that the club can strike a deal with Burnley and secure one of England’s most promising young goalkeepers.
