Newcastle United are reportedly nearing the completion of a deal for goalkeeper James Trafford, while also setting their sights on a commanding midfield presence who has already been scouted in person.

Following the earlier arrival of Antonio Cordero, the Magpies are poised to welcome their second signing of the summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are “closing in” on a move for James Trafford, who has long been a top target for the club.

Trafford was instrumental in Burnley’s promotion campaign in the Championship, delivering standout performances throughout the season.

Still just 22 years old, the England international is viewed as a long-term successor to Nick Pope and is expected to take over as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper in the near future.

His youth, talent, and composure make him one of the most promising young shot-stoppers in European football, providing Eddie Howe with a significant upgrade between the posts.

Attacking Options and Rejected Offers

Newcastle are not solely focused on strengthening their goalkeeping ranks.

After missing out on Joao Pedro and stepping back from a pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo—who reportedly prefers a move to Manchester United—the club has shifted its attention to new targets.

One such name is Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga. Following Mbeumo’s rejection, Elanga quickly appeared on Newcastle’s radar, and a bid was subsequently submitted.

According to NUFC Blog, the club’s ownership group, PIF, is evaluating a potential transfer after completing an in-person scouting assignment.

Richardson, described by analyst Ben Mattinson as having a “freak athletic profile,” stands at 6’5″ and combines his physicality with notable technical ability.

At 23, he represents a high-upside addition and could make a major leap by transitioning from Serie A to the Premier League.
