Tottenham Hotspur Eye £50m-Rated Defender Maxime Esteve Amid Defensive Reinforcements
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly “contenders” to sign Burnley centre-back Maxime Esteve, with journalist Pete O’Rourke revealing the French defender now carries a £50 million price tag.
Spurs have been active in the transfer market, recently securing the £55 million signing of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United.
They also remain optimistic about completing a deal for Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently stated:
“They want to proceed with the deal. Nottingham Forest are prepared to fight. Tottenham are still hopeful and confident to get the player, but it’s one to watch closely in the coming days.”
Should that deal be finalised, Spurs are expected to shift focus to shoring up their defence—an area of concern after posting the fifth-worst defensive record in the Premier League last season.
Speaking to Football Insider, O’Rourke offered insight into Tottenham’s interest in Esteve:
“Everton have shown strong interest, and now Tottenham are being mentioned as contenders. They tried to sign him in January.
Burnley don’t want to lose him and have placed a £50 million valuation on his head.
He’s under contract until 2029, so they’re in a strong position. That price tag could scare off most clubs.”
While £50 million may be steep for a player yet to establish himself in the Premier League, Esteve’s credentials are promising.
The 22-year-old was a key figure in Burnley’s promotion from the Championship, playing every match and helping the Clarets concede just 16 goals all season.
Manager Scott Parker praised him highly, saying:
“He’s a great kid, an unbelievable professional. His aura, humility, and quality make him a top boy.”
Although Esteve’s potential is clear, Tottenham may hesitate at such a high fee.
With Burnley in a strong position and unwilling to sell cheaply, Spurs could ultimately pursue alternative defensive options this summer.
