Where is Albian Hajdari?

Seventeen days have passed since West Ham were reported to be closing in on a deal for FC Lugano’s Albian Hajdari, yet the Swiss defender remains nowhere in sight.

During that time, the Hammers completed the signing of Callum Wilson following his Newcastle release, edged closer to securing Leicester City goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, and look set to bring in Botafogo’s John Victor.

But Hajdari, once seen as a priority defensive target, has seemingly vanished from the club’s immediate plans.

On July 20th, Fussball Transfers reported that West Ham had reached a ‘verbal agreement’ with the 22-year-old Switzerland U21 international.

At the time, the move appeared to be progressing well, with interest also coming from Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen.

With a modest £4.3 million release clause, Hajdari was seen as a shrewd and affordable addition—precisely the sort of signing West Ham fans had been hoping for under Graham Potter’s reign.

And yet, despite those early signs of progress, there has been complete silence since.

Swiss outlet BlueWin recently questioned the situation: “What’s going on with Hajdari?” — a sentiment echoed by West Ham supporters.

They noted that while talk of an agreement with the London club spread in July, everything now seems to have stalled.

Another Swiss source, Blick, added that both Hajdari and fellow Lugano talent Mattia Zanotti were expected to bring in significant funds for the club. However, as of early August, both players remain on Lugano’s books.

It’s far from ideal for the Swiss Super League side, who are under Financial Fair Play pressure and need sales to finance new arrivals.

Despite the uncertainty, the move isn’t dead. Hajdari has been omitted from Lugano’s opening two league games of the 2025/26 season—strong evidence that head coach Mattia Croci-Torti still anticipates his departure.

In a recent interview, Croci-Torti praised Hajdari’s influence in build-up play and acknowledged the void his absence creates, hinting that they may need to seek internal solutions or await sporting director intervention if he leaves.

So, what’s caused the sudden standstill?

One possible explanation lies in the status of Nayef Aguerd. The Moroccan centre-back was widely expected to leave this summer, with interest from Roma, Marseille, Juventus, and others.

Hajdari, a left-footed defender like Aguerd, may have been targeted as his replacement.

However, Roma—who reportedly made a £15 million bid earlier in the window—have now cooled their interest, as have the other European suitors.

If Aguerd is no longer on the move, West Ham may have paused or even shelved their pursuit of Hajdari.

As things stand, unless there’s renewed activity in Aguerd’s situation before the window closes in early September, Lugano may be forced to bring Hajdari back into the fold and postpone any sale until 2026.

While his future remains uncertain, one thing is clear: both club and player are stuck in limbo, waiting for the next domino to fall.
