Everton have reportedly “explored a deal” to sign Sunderland prodigy Chris Rigg this summer, according to TEAMtalk.
Earlier this year, David Moyes returned to Goodison Park for his second spell as manager, 12 years after leaving the club.
His comeback brought immediate improvement, with Everton climbing well clear of relegation danger and finishing comfortably in mid-table.
So far this transfer window, the Toffees have made four new signings in addition to making Charly Alcaraz’s loan permanent.
Mark Travers has joined as goalkeeper, Adam Aznou strengthens the defence, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall bolsters midfield, and Thierno Barry adds firepower up front.
Moyes, however, still wants more reinforcements, particularly in midfield, and Rigg has emerged as a prime target.
Sunderland, who returned to the Premier League last season after nearly a decade away, have blended experienced players with a core of young talents.
Among their brightest prospects is Rigg, who made his debut in 2023 and has since become a regular starter at just 18 years old.
TEAMtalk notes Moyes is seeking “young and hungry attacking players,” a description that fits Rigg perfectly. Everton are also tracking Southampton youngster Tyler Dibling.
Rigg, hailed by some as “the best young English player since Jude Bellingham,” is an attack-minded midfielder capable of contributing defensively as well.
His versatility, maturity, and energy make him an exciting option for Moyes’ plans.
However, prising him away from Sunderland could prove difficult. The Black Cats recently lost Jobe Bellingham and may be reluctant to part with another homegrown star.
At present, Everton and Sunderland remain “miles apart” in their valuation of Rigg, but if a deal can be struck, it would represent a major coup for the Merseyside club.
The pursuit signals Everton’s intent to blend proven Premier League quality with emerging talent as they aim to push higher up the table in the 2025/26 season.
Rigg’s signing, if successful, would be a statement move for Moyes and a key step in his rebuilding project.
