West Ham United are heading into the upcoming campaign with several unresolved questions, as Graham Potter prepares to embark on his first full season at the helm.

For the former Brighton and Chelsea boss, this could prove to be a pivotal chapter in his managerial journey.

After a disappointing 14th-place finish last term, Potter will be well aware of the need to set the right tone early at the London Stadium if he hopes to steer the club towards a more competitive position.

His departure has yet to be adequately addressed, with incoming reinforcements largely focused on bolstering the defence and the acquisition of veteran striker Callum Wilson on a free transfer.

As the transfer window edges closer to its conclusion, midfield has become the key area in need of strengthening.

West Ham have already seen a bid turned down by Southampton for promising youngster Mateus Fernandes.

Now, reports suggest the club has set its sights on a more experienced option in the form of Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini.

West Ham ‘courting’ Roma star Lorenzo Pellegrini

According to Italian outlet La Repubblica, the Hammers are actively pursuing the Roma and Italy international, who is capable of operating both centrally and in more advanced roles.

The report claims West Ham could table a formal offer “in the coming days,” with Pellegrini himself awaiting clarity on his future after eight seasons at the Stadio Olimpico.

The 29-year-old’s position at the Serie A side is reportedly uncertain following the arrival of manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

This comes on the back of a relatively subdued 2024/25 campaign in which he recorded just three goals and three assists.

Nonetheless, Pellegrini’s reputation as one of Italy’s finest midfield talents remains intact, known for his vision, technical skill, goal threat, and leadership qualities.

While perhaps not a long-term solution, Pellegrini could provide Potter’s side with a smart, immediate replacement for Kudus’ creative spark.

Having spent his entire career in Serie A and graduated from Roma’s academy, he may now be tempted by the challenge of Premier League football and the chance to test himself in a new environment.

Jose Mourinho’s admiration for Pellegrini

During his tenure at Roma from 2021 to 2024, former manager Jose Mourinho was an outspoken admirer of Pellegrini’s abilities.

Under Mourinho, the midfielder played a central role in winning the UEFA Conference League and was described as one of the most valuable assets at the club.

Mourinho once remarked:

“He can play in all those roles [No.10 and in midfield]. If we had three Pellegrinis, I would play all three.

None would sit on the bench. He’s versatile, adaptable to multiple positions, and even played wide on the right recently.

He’s intelligent, understands the game, and knows exactly what the coach expects. If we had three of him, all three would play.”

In 2022, Mourinho reiterated his praise:

“I said before that I wanted three in the team. Now, he’s matured into a top player, capable of more than three roles. He has exceptional quality and maturity.

He’s vital to us. I can’t say he’ll always play midfield because there are many matches, but he will feature everywhere, simply because he can.”
