Leicester City boss set for first Championship away test as his side face Preston on Saturday
Marti Cifuentes insists Leicester City’s focus will not waver despite growing transfer speculation, as the manager prepares his side for Saturday’s trip to Preston (3pm).
Several key players expected to feature at Deepdale have been at the centre of rumours this week, but Cifuentes is convinced they will remain professional and fully committed on the pitch.
Among those linked with moves are James Justin, attracting interest from Leeds and Everton; Abdul Fatawu, also on Everton’s radar; Harry Winks, wanted by Valencia; Caleb Okoli, reportedly eyed by AC Milan; and Bilal El Khannouss, who has suitors across the Premier League.
“It’s the reality for every club in the country,” Cifuentes said. “The players’ mindset is very clear. Everybody wants to perform well, and as professionals, they carry that pride.
“We’re building something here, and everyone understands this is a transition period. Hopefully it ends soon so we can concentrate fully on what matters most. But right now, the market is still open, and we must live with it.
“I have no complaints about the professionalism or commitment shown in training and matches. We just need to manage the situation.”
Leicester have already generated around £30m from the sales of Mads Hermansen, Wilfred Ndidi and Conor Coady.
However, two years ago, during their last Championship campaign, the club made more than £90m from player sales, which enabled them to reinvest £38m on five signings while also securing four loan deals.
This summer, further outgoings may be necessary before any major additions can be made. So far, the only arrival has been veteran goalkeeper Asmir Begovic on a free transfer.
A new striker remains the main priority, with Cifuentes emphasising the importance of strengthening the attack.
While he has downplayed the need for midfield reinforcements, departures of Winks or El Khannouss could force the club to act in that area too.
For now, Cifuentes is determined to keep his squad’s focus on results rather than rumours, trusting that the professionalism shown so far will continue through this crucial stage of the season.
