Everton’s evolving squad could become even stronger with Moyes eyeing more additions
Ahead of their clash with Leeds United, Everton appear to be in a strong position, though the performance will say a lot about where they truly stand this season.
The Friedkin Group have already demonstrated their ambition, yet David Moyes still seems unconvinced by the options available in his current squad.
Wayne Rooney has even tipped Everton to push for European qualification, but that may only be realistic if the club secure more dynamic players before the window closes.
So far, Everton have spent just over £100 million, with £74 million already invested in the squad, and one potential signing now looks very attainable.
Reports suggest the Toffees could secure Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis for just £17 million.
At present, Idrissa Gana Gueye looks to be Moyes’ only guaranteed starter in the midfield pivot, while Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is expected to take on a more advanced attacking role.
That leaves a clear need for another all-action box-to-box option, and Luis could be the perfect fit.
The Portuguese midfielder appears to be edging towards the exit at Benfica, with his price tag originally set at £26 million.
According to A Bola’s print edition (18/08/25), Juventus, Roma, and Napoli are among those circling, but Everton are the only Premier League side credited with genuine interest.
Encouragingly, Benfica are now said to be “open to negotiating,” with a revised deal worth £17 million plus bonuses potentially sealing his departure.
Such a fee would represent excellent value, particularly given Luis’ reputation and comparisons in recent years.
The Mirror have even likened him to Paul Pogba, noting his strong presence and combative style in midfield.
Pairing him with Gueye could give Moyes two aggressive ball-winners, a strategy that often proves successful in the Premier League.
At 25, Luis offers both energy and maturity, while his relentless work rate has also drawn parallels with N’Golo Kante.
For Everton, signing a player with qualities of both Pogba and Kante would undoubtedly strengthen their squad significantly.
Competition from Italy remains fierce, but Everton have already fended off Serie A sides during this window, notably when Napoli chased Jack Grealish.
The Friedkin Group may now need to replicate that determination to bring Florentino Luis to Goodison Park.
