Everton eye move for ex-Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof before transfer deadline
David Moyes has already strengthened Everton’s defence this summer with the signing of Adam Aznou from Bayern Munich, but the manager is still eager to add further reinforcements at the back.
The need for another centre-back has grown following Jarrad Branthwaite’s injury. James Tarkowski and Michael Keane formed the partnership as Everton beat Brighton, and Moyes also deployed them in the defeat against Leeds United.
Victor Lindelof prefers Fiorentina
Everton are among the clubs interested in Victor Lindelof, who is available on a free transfer after leaving Manchester United at the end of June.
The Swedish defender has spent the past seven years in the Premier League but is now seeking a fresh challenge abroad.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Everton approached Lindelof on 26 August, yet the 31-year-old appears set on a move to Serie A with Fiorentina.
Why Everton shouldn’t worry
Lindelof’s preference for Fiorentina should not trouble the Toffees. At 31, he represents a short-term fix rather than a meaningful upgrade, having struggled with injuries and inconsistency during his time at Old Trafford.
Last season he managed just 25 appearances across all competitions and failed to stand out as a reliable performer.
While his free-agent status makes him an inexpensive option, Lindelof offers little to improve Everton’s long-term defensive stability.
Moyes’ side would benefit more from targeting younger, higher-quality defenders capable of challenging Tarkowski and eventually replacing him as the team’s defensive leader.
Everton must act quickly
With the summer transfer deadline on 1 September, urgency is crucial. Moyes cannot afford to settle for underwhelming solutions if Everton are to push on this season.
Recruiting motivated, elite-level players who can grow with the club is far more important than snapping up veterans whose best years are behind them.
Behind the scenes, Everton must continue working to secure the right signings, as the squad still looks two or three additions short of being ready to meet their 2025/26 ambitions.
