Everton wrapped up the 2025 summer transfer window with nine arrivals, sealing Merlin Rohl on deadline day.
David Moyes may have wanted ten new additions, but the nine players brought in this summer were all of genuine quality, leaving the Scotsman satisfied with the overall business.
Jack Grealish has already shown his class with standout displays, while Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall marked his arrival by scoring his first goal for the club at the weekend.
Still, Everton’s squad isn’t completely balanced. Some gaps remain, and Moyes will certainly revisit those issues when the January transfer window comes around.
Everton eyeing Maitland-Niles
Despite strengthening across most areas of the pitch, Everton’s summer business left one problem unsolved: right-back.
Moyes pursued reinforcements for that position throughout the window. Fulham’s Kenny Tete was close to joining in June, only for the deal to collapse.
Barcelona youngster Hector Fort then emerged as a prime target, and his absence from their weekend squad suggested a late breakthrough could happen.
However, the move ultimately fell through, with Fort now expected to join newly promoted La Liga outfit Elche instead.
That leaves Lyon’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles as a realistic January target. The former Arsenal man is keen on returning to England, and with just 18 months left on his deal by the winter, Moyes sees him as a viable and affordable option.
A deal is already being considered, and it looks one with genuine potential.
A new striker also on the agenda
The departure of Youssef Chermiti to Rangers has left Everton light in attack. At present, only Thierno Barry and Beto provide options up front, which is not enough for a long campaign.
Moyes has been eager to secure another centre-forward, with Millwall’s Mihailo Ivanovic previously on the radar. His name was linked soon after Barry’s arrival, suggesting the club always intended to recruit a third striker.
Hamza Igamane was also monitored closely, but the Moroccan forward chose a move to Ligue 1 side Lille.
Given the lack of depth, expect Everton to return to the market in January, with a right-back and a striker topping Moyes’ wishlist as he looks to continue building a squad capable of pushing higher up the table.
