David Moyes left short of options as Everton suffer fresh Mykolenko injury setback
Everton’s decision not to strengthen their defence on deadline day has already come back to haunt them, with the squad now looking stretched.
Days after the window shut, Vitaliy Mykolenko returned from international duty with Ukraine nursing an injury, raising serious concerns over David Moyes’ options at left-back.
There was a glimmer of good news as Adam Aznou finally made his comeback from injury this week.
However, the teenager, who missed much of pre-season, is still building fitness and cannot yet be relied upon for consistent minutes in the Premier League.
The Toffees did push late for Ben Chilwell before the deadline, but the Chelsea defender instead opted for a move to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg. That failed pursuit has left Everton short, with cover in defence already thin.
One obvious solution could be Sergio Reguilon, who remains available as a free agent after leaving Tottenham earlier in the summer.
The Spaniard had been on Everton’s radar previously, and with injuries mounting, a deal now looks increasingly logical.
James Garner has been forced to deputise at left-back on two occasions already this season. While capable, the midfielder is best used in the centre of the pitch and his talents are wasted in a makeshift defensive role.
If Everton do not act, Moyes may have no choice but to keep using Garner there, given the uncertainty around Mykolenko’s recovery. Aznou could eventually step up, but at 19 he remains raw and untested at Premier League level.
Reguilon, meanwhile, ticks many boxes for a short-term fix. The 28-year-old boasts 81 Premier League appearances from stints at Tottenham, Manchester United, and Brentford.
He played 28 times across all competitions in 2023/24 for Thomas Frank’s side, registering four assists and offering valuable energy on the flank.
Though he made only six appearances last season, he has previously been praised by pundits such as Gary Neville, who described him as quick, aggressive, and always eager to attack with pace.
He may not represent a long-term solution or a standout signing, but Reguilon would provide much-needed depth and experience at a critical moment.
For Everton, the cost of signing him would surely outweigh the risk of leaving their backline exposed.
