The summer transfer window may have only closed a little under two weeks ago, but for any well-run football club, planning for the next window begins immediately.

With the January market just a few months away, Leicester City must already be outlining their priorities.

Circumstances in football can change quickly—injuries, dips in form, or the sudden emergence of new talents all play their part—but having a clear strategy in place will allow City to take full advantage of the short winter window when it arrives. Here are some areas where movement could occur.

Decisions at centre-back

Harry Souttar has been named in Leicester’s official squad for the first half of the season and is expected to return to training in October or November.

If he regains full fitness, the Australia international will be in line to play his first game for City since December 2023.

By January, this could leave manager Martí Cifuentes with as many as five senior centre-backs. That number seems excessive, making it likely that one will need to depart.

The question for Cifuentes will be which four defenders he values most. If Ben Nelson ends up as the odd man out, then a loan move will be important for his development, ensuring he gets valuable minutes rather than stagnating on the bench.

For others, perhaps a permanent move would make more sense.

Balancing the left-back options

At left-back, the situation is similarly complicated. Victor Kristiansen has only just resumed training and, due to a couple of injuries since the summer, is yet to feature under Cifuentes. His exact role in the squad remains uncertain.

For now, Luke Thomas has enjoyed the opportunity to stake a claim as first-choice, which may push Kristiansen down the pecking order.

Given that Ricardo Pereira and Hamza Choudhury are filling the right-back roles, one of them will usually take up a bench spot, potentially leaving Kristiansen excluded from matchday squads altogether.

That is a dramatic change for a player who was a starter for a Champions League-qualifying Serie A side when Leicester were last in the Championship. If he is left without opportunities, finding him a new club could become a priority in January.

Should Kristiansen leave, City would likely need to bring in another left-back, either as a direct replacement starter or as a young talent willing to begin as back-up.

However, if academy prospect Bade Aluko develops strongly in the coming months, City may feel comfortable without signing anyone new.

Sorting out the wide players

On the wings, Leicester currently have an excess of options. Cifuentes already has a leading trio of Abdul Fatawu, Stephy Mavididi, and Jeremy Monga, with a fourth player needed to provide depth. That leaves others surplus to requirements.

If Bobby De Cordova-Reid becomes the preferred fourth-choice option, then the logical solution may be to loan out younger players like Silko Thomas and Wanya Marcal for the remainder of the season, giving them the regular game time that won’t be available at the King Power Stadium.
