Almost half of the Premier League are reportedly monitoring Toulouse centre-back Charlie Cresswell, with Newcastle United among those showing strong interest in the highly rated England youth international.
According to TBR Football, clubs including Liverpool, Manchester City, Everton, Brentford, Brighton, Crystal Palace, and West Ham United have all scouted the 23-year-old defender alongside the Magpies.
Cresswell played a vital role in Lee Carsley’s England Under-21 squad, which successfully defended their European Championship title last summer, defeating Germany in the final.
During that decisive match, the former Leeds United prospect nullified striker Nick Woltemade, who later joined Newcastle for a club-record £69 million.
Intriguingly, the pair could become teammates next season if Newcastle manage to secure Cresswell’s signature.
Newcastle face Premier League competition for Cresswell
The Englishman has made seven appearances in Ligue 1 this term, scoring once during a thrilling 6-3 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Since joining Toulouse in 2023 for around £4 million, Cresswell has continued to impress in France, establishing himself as one of the brightest young defenders on the continent.
His composure, aerial dominance, and ball-playing quality have caught the attention of several top European clubs.
With Newcastle keen to rejuvenate their ageing defence, Eddie Howe is believed to be tracking Cresswell closely.
Although the Magpies signed Malick Thiaw from AC Milan for around £35 million during the summer, injury concerns for Sven Botman and the advancing ages of Fabian Schär, Dan Burn, and Jamaal Lascelles highlight the need for youthful reinforcements at the back.
Cresswell’s addition would strengthen the club’s English core, complementing fellow young defenders Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.
Despite being just 23, he already boasts 85 senior club appearances and 23 England youth caps, spanning from the Under-19s to Carsley’s Under-21s.
Sports Illustrated has described Cresswell as a “powerful” defender — strong in duels yet composed in possession — embodying the attributes of the modern centre-back.
If Newcastle manage to lure him away from Toulouse next summer, they would be landing one of Europe’s most promising young defenders.
However, with elite clubs such as Manchester City also circling, the Magpies could face stiff competition in their pursuit of the talented Englishman.
