Newcastle United could be handed a fresh opportunity to sign long-term target Lucas Paquetá when the January transfer window opens.
Lucas Paquetá, once a top transfer target for Newcastle United, reportedly wants to leave West Ham United in January — reigniting talk of a potential Premier League switch.
The Brazilian midfielder shares a strong bond with Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães, having previously played together at Lyon before both men moved to England.
Newcastle had considered signing Paquetá in 2022 but ultimately decided against it, allowing West Ham to secure his services for £51 million.
Although Eddie Howe has long admired the player, he played down any speculation linking Paquetá to Tyneside three years ago.
Paquetá only added fuel to the rumours at the time by visiting Bruno in Newcastle and exploring the city, sparking excitement among fans. His stint at West Ham has been a rollercoaster.
The 28-year-old played a key role in helping the Hammers win the Europa Conference League in 2023 but soon faced an FA investigation into alleged spot-fixing.
After a two-year probe, he was finally cleared of all betting offences and avoided a potential lifetime ban.
According to The Times, Paquetá’s future in East London could now be drawing to a close, with his agent expected to test the market ahead of the January window.
The Brazilian came close to joining Aston Villa last summer, when a proposed loan deal with an obligation to buy for £47 million almost went through.
Howe remains an admirer of Paquetá, though Newcastle’s midfield is currently well stocked. Still, players of his calibre rarely become available, and Guimarães would likely welcome the chance to reunite with his former Lyon teammate if the Magpies pursued a deal.
West Ham are reportedly seeking around £60 million, but given their struggles near the relegation zone and Paquetá’s contract running until 2027, there could be room for negotiation.
Earning £150,000 a week in London, Paquetá would be an expensive signing but still within Newcastle’s wage structure.
However, Howe would need to convince the club’s hierarchy that investing in a player approaching 30 fits their long-term vision.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have been linked with another potential target — Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordóñez.
The 21-year-old Ecuadorian has reportedly attracted interest from Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Liverpool, according to transfer specialist Ekrem Konur.
Ordóñez fits the youthful profile that Newcastle’s owners, PIF, have instructed Howe to focus on.
Having begun his career at Independiente, he moved to Belgium with Club NXT for £3.5 million before joining Brugge in 2023.
Elsewhere, former Newcastle reserve-team coach Adam Sadler has left Celtic following Brendan Rodgers’ surprise departure earlier this week.
Sadler, who worked with the likes of Tim Krul, Andy Carroll, and Fraser Forster during his St James’ Park tenure, is a long-time ally of Rodgers and is expected to join him in his next managerial role — potentially at Wolves, where the former Liverpool boss has been heavily linked.
